Brief Project Description :
Maitland Cottage Home originated in 1923 as the Invalid Children’s Aid Fund. This fund was formed to help alleviate the suffering of needy children, of all races, were living under appalling conditions.
Today Maitland Cottage Home is a dynamic paediatric orthopaedic hospital, the only one of its kind in the Western Cape, treating indigent patients from all over South Africa.

Preferably students who have completed the first two years, but students who’ve only completed their first year are also welcome to apply.

Detailed Project Description, Mission and Goals of the Project * What do participants exactly have to do, what are the working hours, what is the project aiming for, etc.
Project: The Maitland Cottage Home project (MCH) renders its services to physically disabled children in need of paediatric orthopaedic surgery and treatment as well as medical and nursing care for those children in need of hospitalisation. There is no outpatients department. Patients are admitted via the local clinics held at Red Cross and at various other hospitals and country clinics in the Western Cape.

Working hours: five days a week, approximately 40 hours a week
Activities: MCH is short-staffed and therefore the students main activity is supporting the nurses during their daily activities. Students are concerned with dressing, feting, teaching and animating the patients. If possible students may join doctors during their rounds or during surgery.

It is possible to participate all year, with the exception of December and January (due to lack of staff during the holidays).

Application * Which documents have to be included in the application, to which email-address, when is the deadline for applications?
Application Form, Motivational letter(by standards of IFMSA-NL) and Curriculum Vitae (in English). Documents should be handed 6 months prior to beginning of clerkship. Application for a clerkship in the months June, July and August should be complete on December 15th.
All documents should be admitted within one week of each other. Digital copy of the Motivational letter and the Curriculum Vitae should be sent to: ontwikkelingsstage.vumc@ifmsa.nl. Hard copies of each document should be mailed to: IFMSA-VUmc SCOPH, Van der Boechorststraat 7-9, room BK-46, 1081 BT Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

Leisure Activities After Work, on the weekends
Participants are responsible for arranging their own accommodation but options are given by IFMSA-NL. There are no organized leisure activities, this is up to the student himself.
